Founded in 1821, the Naturmuseum Senckenberg is renowned for its palaeontology section. Areas of interest include the dinosaur room, with skeletons and fossils of giant animals from the Secondary Era; the famous Jurassic excavations from the region of Solnhofen on the banks of the Altmühl (with explanations on the evolution of the human race); and the geological section, notably the fossils from Messel quarry near Darmstadt. Lastly, the museum boasts an interesting collection of stuffed animals.
