The primitive Romanesque building begun around 1200 underwent numerous changes up until the 16C. From the top of the tower there is a splendid view over Freiburg and the surrounding countryside. The porch and west door are decorated with numerous statues (late 13C) depicting Satan and various Biblical characters. Inside, the nave also contains many fine statues. There is an altarpiece (16C) by HB Grien in the light and airy chancel.

This square is a real pleasure to look at, with its flower-filled balconies and chestnut trees framing the statue of Berthold Schwarz (the Franciscan monk who invented gunpowder in around 1350).

The Augustinian Museum is housed in the church of the former Augustinian convent. Home to a fascinating collection of medieval art, the museum’s exhibits include a section of an altarpiece by Grünewald representing the miracle of the Madonna of the Snows (1519), works by Lucas Cranach and Hans Baldung Grien, as well as an impressive 14C crucifix (Adelhauser Kreuz). Among the statues there are some magnificent examples from the 14C and 15C.

In 1901, two former burghers' houses dating from the 16C were linked by a central arcaded section, and turned into the town hall. The oriel window at one corner of the square has preserved its sculpted decoration depicting the Lady with the Unicorn.

This final hill in the Black Forest is covered with woods. From the top, which you can reach either on foot or in a cable-car from the Swabian gate, there is a fine view of the cathedral.

The road leads to the upper cable car station. From the car park, head to the viewing platform (91 steps) by following the “Rundweg” and “Schauinsland Gipfel” signs (30min there and back). The view takes in the pastures of the Feldberg.

This 18C church is built in the middle of the quadrangle formed by the old abbey buildings. After the dome of St. Peter's in Rome, and Les Invalides in Paris, this is the third largest dome in Europe. Inside the dome is a false cupola, suspended from the true dome although it appears to be supported by the columns of the central rotunda. Behind the high altar lies the chancel, which is quite long and roofed with cradle vaulting.

The erection of a dam made this originally quite small lake the largest stretch of water in the Black Forest.

This pretty lake at the meeting point of several routes has become an important tourist centre. It has developed both as a health centre and a departure point for Black Forest excursions.
