Garmisch-Partenkirchen, now an internationally famous ski resort, was opened for the Winter Olympics of 1936. Despite a relatively low altitude (720m), the resort’s favourable weather conditions ensure that it has plenty of good quality snow every winter. In summer, with 300km of hiking paths and dozens of summits over 2 000m, Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers almost limitless options for outdoor activities. Walkers are also attracted here by the cool temperatures of its woodland, its small mountain lakes and beaches and its mountain refuges.
