The Karstadt, designed in 1912-13 by the Potsdam architect Schmanns, is the last Art Nouveau department store still standing. The steel-framed building possesses a massive exterior faced with freestone, an inner courtyard topped by a glazed barrel roof, a magnificent stairway and columns of astonishing elegance.
