Greifswald Interesting : Michelin's recommendations

First mentioned in 1248, this town flourished after joining the Hanseatic League (1281). At the same time, building began on three imposing parish churches, which today give the town its characteristic skyline. The architecture, which fortunately came through the Second World War vitually unscathed, shows evidence of the period when the city was under Swedish rule (1648-1815). The Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich was a native of Greifswald, and drew on the town a great deal in his work.

  • Greifswald Hall-church Interesting

    Marienkirchplatz D - 17489 Greifswald

    This hall church with three naves (13C and 14C) has no chancel, giving a stocky, massive look to the whole building. The pulpit dates from 1587. A number of frescoes in Late Gothic style dating from the 14C have been uncovered.

    The town hall is characterized by pediments in the Renaissance style (1738). Several interesting houses can be found in the market place. The house at No 11 is one of the finest examples in Northern Germany of a Gothic brick building.
