This hall church with three naves (13C and 14C) has no chancel, giving a stocky, massive look to the whole building. The pulpit dates from 1587. A number of frescoes in Late Gothic style dating from the 14C have been uncovered.

The town hall is characterized by pediments in the Renaissance style (1738). Several interesting houses can be found in the market place. The house at No 11 is one of the finest examples in Northern Germany of a Gothic brick building.

The original hall-church became a basilica in the 14C when a ring of 21 chapels was added. During the 19C, it was redecorated in a neo-Gothic style. Note the many oil paintings and tombstones. The frescoes date from 1430.

4 Ruins of the Eldena Cloister

The old Cistercian cloister, founded in 1199, probably reached its peak in the mid-14C. These ruins were preserved thanks to Caspar David Friedrich. The red brick forms a delightful contrast with the green and leafy setting.
