In its general appearance the building resembles French cathedrals of the time. It was erected between the 13C and the end of the 15C. The little St Mary's chapel and the ambulatory are typical of the High Gothic period. The nave has no triforium. Note the rood screen in Late Gothic style. Above it is the Triumphal Cross group, an example of late Romanesque sculpture from the Ottonian cathedral that used to occupy the site of the present building.
