Halle : Michelin's recommendations
Halle is important both as an industrial centre with its mechanical engineering and chemical industries, and as a centre of intellectual excellence with a long-standing university tradition. As from 806, a fortress protected the salt mines that provided the city's wealth. The founding of the Brotherhood of Musicians and Fife Players (13C) and an opera in 1654 bear witness to the city's love of music. Each year there is a Handel Festival in honour of the Baroque composer, who was born here.
