An extension of Speicherstadt towards the south, this new district (sustainable development model for towns located next to water) is the largest urban development project in Europe. In 20 years, 155ha will gradually be added to Hamburg's city centre, with living space, offices, cultural and leisure spaces, associations and educational establishments, shops and restaurants. Like a lighthouse to the west of the district, the Elbphilharmonie is an impressive transparent concert hall, designed by the Swiss firm of architects Herzog & de Meuron.
