This is where the fire of 1842 started. It is lined with merchants' houses from the 17 and 18C that now house taverns. The warehouses with their restored façades face the Nikolaifleet canal, a picture-postcard view of old Hamburg. The Hohe Brücke bridge that crosses the canal gives you a general view of these façades. Note the pulleys on the gables for loading merchandise and the marks of the floods of 1962 and 1976 on the walls.
