As well as sections on the Middle Ages (see the retable by Maître Bertram) and the 17C Dutch collection (Rembrandt, Jan Steel), the museum's main attraction is German painting from the 19C. Caspar David Friedrich, Feuerbach, Böcklin and Menzel dominate this section. The modern era includes works from artists of the Brücke and Blaue Reiter. In the contemporary art gallery, which is devoted to art since the 1960s, Germany is well represented (Richter, Beuys).
