Sankt-Pauli is laid out around Reeperbahn, the main thoroughfare, and is home to the Davidwache, the city's main police station. It had its golden age in the 1960s, when The Beatles played at the Star Club on Große Freiheit. At that time its image was marred by prostitution and drug trafficking; recently, though, the area has undergone a real renaissance. The sex industry may continue to thrive here, but there is also a plethora of inviting and authentic bars, cafés and restaurants, making this a hub of nightlife that draws in both locals and visitors.
