This former lively fortified town lies at the point where the valley widens out. You can see the remains of medieval fortifications and fine old buildings. Be sure to see the church with its Late Gothic altar, and the Pastoral Museum, a handsome half-timbered building (1524) devoted to popular arts and traditions. From the bridge over the Pegnitz, you can see the gate of the Wassertor (residential tower) and its stone customs house.
