Jena : Michelin's recommendations
Jena, lying northeast of the Thuringian Forest, began to develop after a university was founded there in 1588. Thereafter the city's reputation was enhanced by numerous scientists and intellectuals such as Goethe, Schiller, the philologist Wilhelm von Humboldt and his geographer brother Alexander. In the mid-19C, Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe developed the optical industry, starting with their new invention, the microscope. Today, Jena is a lively city with an eye to the future.
