Konstanz
: Michelin's recommendations
The city, a German enclave on the Swiss bank of Lake Constance, lies in beautiful surroundings. It was long thought to have been founded by the Roman emperor Constantius Chlorus (292-306). From 1414 to 1418, a council met there in an attempt to re-establish Church unity, jeopardized by the claims of three ecclesiastical dignitaries elected as Pope. Only Benedict XIII, who took refuge in Spain, remained adamant. In 1417, the election of Martin V put a temporary end to the schism.
