The town was once the seat of the Hohenzollern Margraves of Franconia. Plassenburg Castle, a medieval fortress, has a magnificent Renaissance courtyard and a fine collection of 300,000 tin soldiers. The castle also houses the Regional Museum of Upper Main, and the national art collections.
