This former royal seat and garrison town on the banks of the River Neckar originated with the Baroque palace, surrounded by a magnificent lake, which Duke Eberhard Ludwig von Württemberg, inspired by Versailles, had built in the early 18C. The orderly grid of the streets is an indication of the town's original design. The film academy, founded in 1991 on a former military and industrial site, is the most recent training ground for up-and-coming actors and actresses in Germany.
