The town was founded by Duke Friedrich of Mecklenburg, who moved his residence from Schwerin to Ludwigslust in 1764. The town and the castle were built concurrently, under the direction of Johann Joachim Busch, the court architect. The financially-strapped Duke ordered papier mâché to be used for decoration instead of costlier materials. The factory where it was made exported its products as far as Russia, but closed in 1835 for lack of orders.
