The oldest church in the city, Johanneskirche existed as early as the 10C but was destroyed down to its surrounding walls during the Second World War. Luther preached here in 1524 (commemorative monument in front of the church). Today it is used as a space for shows and exhibitions. From the top of the 60m-high south tower, there is a fine panoramic view over Magdeburg.
