From a small colony at the end of the Roman era, Memmingen became a free Imperial town of notable importance in the Swabian-Bavarian Pre-Alps. The old town, surrounded by ramparts of which a large part has been preserved, still shows the characteristic appearance of a medieval trading centre. The Gothic buildings, medieval guildhalls and richly decorated Rococo villas give a vivid picture of more than 850 years of history.
