A Museum of Stringed Instrument Making recalls that in 1684, Matthias Klotz introduced the luthier's art to the village. He had lived in Italy, where he studied with Stradivari. Aside from the museum, some dozen craftsmen and a technical school are keeping the tradition of lutherie alive in Mittenwald.
