At the centre of this square is Munich's new synagogue, inaugurated in 2006, 68 years after the pogrom known as the Night of Broken Glass (Kristallnacht), when Jewish places of worship were torn down. The building recalls the lines of Jerusalem's temple with its wailing wall. The construction, opposite the city's history museum, marks the return of the Jewish community, which, now 10 000 strong, has once more reached its 1930s level.
