The historic capital of Westphalia is today one of Germany's most important university centres. Its tasteful renovation has restored part of its glorious heritage, replete with innumerable Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance façades. The Peace of Westphalia, proclaimed in 1648 in Münster, put an end to the Thirty Years War, but much of Germany was carved up as a result. Peacetime favoured the emergence of the Calvinists who were granted the same rights as the Lutherans.
