The town is not as recent as its name suggests, since it was founded in 1248 by order of the Margrave Johann von Brandenburg. The adjective «neu» (new) is meant only to distinguish it from the city of Brandenburg. It is built on a circular plan crisscrossed by a network of streets. In 1945, 80% of the old town was destroyed, but the town's fortifications were spared. Today they are the major tourist attraction.

The church belonged to the Franciscan monastery built in the 13C and 14C. The paintings with plant motifs date from the 19C. The Baroque altar from 1730, with its extravagant woodcarving, depicts the Crucifixion. The pulpit is in Renaissance style.
Built around the year 1300, this is the oldest of Neubrandenburg's town gates. On the country side, the evolution from Romanesque to Gothic style can be seen, whereas the town side is pure Gothic. Note the houses built into the walls.
