Built around the year 1300, this is the oldest of Neubrandenburg's town gates. On the country side, the evolution from Romanesque to Gothic style can be seen, whereas the town side is pure Gothic. Note the houses built into the walls.

Of the two towers which reinforced the fortifications in the 15C, only the 19m-high Fangelturm remains. It is 6.5m in diameter and its walls are 2.3m thick. The spire was added in 1845.

The gate was built during the first half of the 14C. The tower and gable end form a unified design whose verticality is emphasized by the nine terracotta figures. The outer gate is especially richly decorated.

At the Stargarder Tor, nine terracotta statues of women dressed in long skirts look out at the town. Some historians see them as a representation of the Wise and Foolish Virgins.
