It is thought that this ancient city set in the heart of a rich wine-growing region dates back to before 1000. Its present status as largest wine-producing centre of Germany has however failed to tarnish the charm of its historic centre. After miraculously escaping the ravages of several wars, the pedestrian town centre is extremely pleasant. Be sure to see the lovely market square and its 16C town hall.
