This former Imperial town, first mentioned in historical records in 898, is built in the middle of the Ries basin. It developed in concentric fashion, as can be seen in the street pattern and the ring of fortifications. Occupying an important position for trade at the gates of the Bavarian Plateau, Nördlingen was the site of the French victories over the Austrians in 1796 and 1800.
