The project was drawn up by Friedrich Wilhelm IV, who was inspired by Italian Renaissance villas such as the Villa Medicis in Rome. Set in the park of Sanssouci, the austere façade of the new orangery is 330m long. It is best seen from a distance. The apartments occupied by Czar Nicholas I and his wife, sister of the king of Prussia, are quite magnificent, in particular the Malachite Hall (in the Czarina's apartment). The Raphael Hall houses 47 copies of the Italian painter's most famous works.
