Situated at the point where the Rhine turns north again after having been deflected westward through the Rheingau vineyards at Mainz, Rüdesheim has become the most important tourist centre in the valley. The narrow streets, among which is the celebrated Drosselgasse, are crammed with visitors attracted by the wine cellars where the famous Rieslings can be sampled. There are also distilleries and cellars featuring sparkling wines.
