The Rhine flows from Switzerland northbound for over 1 320km passing through four countries. The portion between Rüdesheim and Koblenz, with the fortresses of Marksburg, Pfalz bei Kaub and the famous rock of the mermaid of Lore, Loreley, does full justice to the river's strategic and romantic reputation.
