Linked to the continent by a 2.5km-long bridge over the Strelasund straits near Stralsund, Rügen is Germany's largest island (926 km2). To the west, the seacoast is indented, following the irregular contours of many inlets, while to the east chalk cliffs and sand beaches attract numerous visitors every summer.
