In medieval times Saalfeld's silver and copper mines made it one of the most important towns in Thuringia, whereas its position on the main trade route to Bohemia assured its commercial prosperity. The Renaissance town hall overlooking the marketplace is designed around a façade that centres on a staircase tower. On the other side of the square, the Market pharmacy is one of the rare Romanesque buildings in the area.
