Magnificently situated in a landscape of lakes and forests, Schwerin renewed its links with its administrative past by becoming a Land capital in 1990. The origins of the town go back to the 11C when the Slavs built a fortress on what is now the castle island. It was not long, however, before they were expelld by Henry the Lion, duke of Saxony, who established the first German town east of the Elbe. For five centuries (1358-1918) after that, Schwerin was the capital of the Duchy of Meklenburg.
