Built between 1845 and 1857 in neo-Renaissance style with Gothic and Baroque features, this is one of the most important 19C civic buildings in Germany. The palace was once the residence of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The rooms are decorated with 18C and 19C paintings and craftwork and there is an interesting exhibition of European porcelain and painting in the children’s rooms. Note the Throne Room, the Ancestors' Gallery and the Smoking Room, as well as the fine parquet floors.
