Stade : Michelin's recommendations

Situated on the navigable stretch of the Schwinge, which flows into the Elbe to the northeast, Stade rivalled Hamburg as a port in the Middle Ages. The Swedes occupied the town during the Thirty Years War and transformed it during 70 years of occupation into a garrison stronghold and administrative centre, the capital of their northern German territory. Most of the beautiful old town was built after 1659, the year of the great fire that destroyed two thirds of the town's dwellings.
