The old town is renowned for the quantity and the quality of its half-timbered houses, each of which is more beautiful than the other. Like most of the buildings in the old town, the majority were rebuilt after the great fire of 1659 which destroyed two thirds of the town. Among the most picturesque are the greengrocers (Hökerstraße 27), the twin house (Bäckerstraße 1-3) and that of the farmhand (Bungenstraße 20).
