Trier : Michelin's recommendations
This venerable episcopal city is the oldest in Germany. The Roman Emperor Augustus founded Augusta Treveverum at a point where Celtic, Germanic and Roman culture met. As capital of the Western Empire it was the centre of intense economic, cultural and intellectual activity. During the Middle Ages the city again flourished under the powerful archbishops. Trier was the administrative centre for the Saar before passing into Prussian hands in 1815. Today the city is best known as a cultural centre.
