The castle houses the university's collections, some of which come from private donations. The pre- and early history department displays many captivating items such as the tiny ivory horse from the Vogelherd grotto. The museum also contains outstanding exhibits from Classical Antiquity, Ancient Egypt and the Ancient Orient. Note in particular the religious chamber from a tomb dating from the Old Kingdom and completely covered in bas-relief sculptures.
