Lake Constance
Lake Constance
By car, 116 km, 1 dayThis lake nestled spectacularly at the foot of the Alps lies between three countries and cultures: Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Thanks to its mild climate, Mediterranean vegetation thrives on its islands and in the surrounding area. The Middle Ages also had a strong impact here, where precious miniatures from the Ottonian era graced the first Benedictine abbey in Germany. As in Constance, the architecture in the region's towns is a testament to its rich past.

Konstanz
The vast Gothic cathedral has an enormous central portion with five aisles covered with fan vaulting. A graceful Swabian work of 1510, the Virgin of the Crescent Moon, stands in St. Elizabeth's chapel off the south aisle.
Now a palace, Salem abbey was built by Franz Beer from the Voralberg School. The size and rich decoration of the buildings bear witness to its former wealth and importance. The old summer refectory has retained its beautiful stuccoed ceiling, the work of the Schmuzer brothers, who also decorated the basket-handle vault in the library. Of particular interest are the Bernard gallery, the Imperial Hall completed in 1707, and the study of Abbot Anselm II decorated in Rococo style.
In the centre of the harbour stands the Mangturm, a fortified 12C tower. A lighthouse and a monument to the Lion of Bavaria (1856) command the port entrance. The Römerschanze is a viewpoint from which to admire the Rhine and the Alpine setting of the «Bodan» (the old form of «Bodensee»).
