Breite Strasse constitutes the most picturesque group with its carefully aligned houses built by the rich burghers of Wernigerode in the 16C, 17C and 18C. The wooden sections and joists are often decorated with masks or carved patterns, a good example being the 1674 house at no 72 known as the «Krummelsches Haus». The smallest house in the town, measuring only 3m/10ft in width, is to be found in the upper part of Kochstrasse at no. 43.
