Wittenberg : Michelin's recommendations

This small town is mainly famous for its connection with Martin Luther. Summoned by the Elector Frederich the Wise to teach philosophy in the newly-founded university, Martin Luther was also appointed town preacher. One year after his death, in 1546, Emperor Charles V seized Wittenberg and legend has it that he meditated over the tomb of the great Reformer.

Castle church

Market square

Markt D - 06886 Lutherstadt Wittenberg

The market square is bordered by gabled houses and contains a statue of Luther and his disciple, Melanchthon. In the southwest stands the house that was home to Lucas Cranach the Elder from 1505 to 1547. He was also mayor the town.

Stadtkirche St Marien

Am Kirchplatz D - 06886 Lutherstadt Wittenberg

This triple-aisle Gothic parish church was redecorated in neo-Gothic style in the 18C. The fact that Luther preached here is celebrated in the 1547 Reform altarpiece painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder.
