Visitors enter the camp through the prisoners’ gate marked with the words “Arbeit macht frei” (“Work brings freedom”). Two groups of huts have been rebuilt, enabling visitors to imagine daily life here. Designed for 5,000 prisoners, the camp housed 30,000 in 1944. A Roman Catholic chapel, the Protestant Church of Reconciliation and a Jewish memorial have all been built here. The area around the cremation ovens close to the camp has been laid out as a necropolis. Outside the camp, the Carmelite Convent chapel is open to the public.
