Ettal Abbey, a Rococo masterpiece, was founded by Louis the Bavarian in 1330. The church has the unique feature in Germany of being constructed on a Gothic building with a polygonal plan. Enrico Zucalli built the façade and chancel (1710-1720), and Joseph Schmuzer the cupola, after the building was devastated by fire.
