Opened in 1930, the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum gives an overview of mining from Antiquity to the present day using graphics, animated scale models, and reconstructions of original machines. Below the museum, a mine museum (Schaubergwerk) has been created with 2.5km of underground tunnels. The complex provides a thorough introduction to mining techniques, with a particular emphasis on coal mining. Visitors can also climb the 71m-high pithead frame for fine views of Bochum and its surrounding area.
