Maximilian II of Bavaria built this castle between 1832 and 1836, on the original 12C feudal ruins. The neo-Gothic style he adopted reflected current taste for the Romantic troubadour style. The decoration is somewhat overdone - the obsessive swan motif, for example - but there is some fine Biedermeier furniture. Ludwig II spent part of his childhood in this chivalrous atmosphere. The music room on the 2nd floor contains a piano used by Wagner.
