In the 10-11C, the island of Reichenau was one of the largest monastic centres in the West. Today the island's 430 hectares are given over to market gardening. The three churches are the island's principal tourist attractions. The Carolingian church of Oberzell houses murals painted c 1000. At Mittelzell, the old abbey church has a rich treasury. Also visit the collegial church of Sts Peter and Paul at Niederzell, with its 12C murals.
