Not far from Hohenschwangau, this castle straight out of a fairy tale was built for Ludwig II of Bavaria. Perched on a rocky ridge overlooking the Pöllat gorge, Neuschwanstein Castle never fails to dazzle visitors with the theatrical atmosphere it creates. The interior decor gives an impression of unreality. Note in particular the 3rd and 4th floors, which contain a false grotto, a winter garden, the unfinished Throne Room and the Minstrels' Room.
