The island is now connected to the continent by a 4km-long causeway. The fens, used for grain farming and pastureland, form a neat checkerboard pattern with farms on built-up hillocks. The heart of the island is Süden, a charming locale where several artists have taken up residence. A part of the island is planted with stands of birch.
