Like the Harz region, the Thuringian Forest is a massif with an average altitude of 1000m, almost entirely covered by forests. The trees are mainly pine and fir, and heather grows abundantly on the hilltops. Many charming villages lie throughout the region, known for centuries as «the green heart of Germany». The inhabitants maintain their traditional time-honoured crafts, and the numerous facilities in the area make it a favourite spot for walkers and summer tourists alike.
