Begun in 1277 by Edward I on the site of an earlier stronghold, the castle was taken by the Welsh Prince, Glyn Dwr, in 1414. It was here that he proclaimed the founding of the independent Church of Wales and the establishment of two universities. All that remains are the ruins of the tower and main gateway.
